About cordyceps

In Asia, cordyceps has been known as a medicinal mushroom for centuries. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), cordyceps has many different medicinal properties. According to TCM, this mushroom balances yin and yang.

Normally mushrooms grow on the ground or on trees, but cordyceps sinensis is different. In the wild, this fungus grows as a parasite in and on the caterpillar of a moth species that is common in the Himalayas.

You can imagine that this parasitic nature makes it difficult to grow this fungus. Until not so long ago that was indeed impossible. Cordyceps sinensis could only be harvested through wild picking.

The high demand for cordyceps, combined with the limited area where this fungus occurs in the wild, made this fungus species increasingly rare.

Fortunately, a reliable method has now been found to cultivate cordyceps sinensis. This removes the need to extract this increasingly rare fungus from nature and the population can recover.

Production

Cordyceps is grown through a process that involves liquid fermentation. First, a mixture of water with certain nutrients is created in a stainless steel tank.

A little bit of live mycelium from cordyceps sinensis is then added to this mixture. The mycelium is then allowed to grow in the mixture for 3 to 8 days. All this time the mixture is kept in motion.

After this, the mycelium is filtered from the rest of the mixture. The mycelium is then allowed to dry. Then the useful substances are extracted from the mycelium. Finally, the extract is put into capsules.
