About Chaga
The unwitting hiker who sees chaga in the forest is unlikely to immediately recognize it as a mushroom. From the outside, this fungus looks more like a black cracked bulge on a birch tree. It is also almost as hard as the living wood from which it feeds.
Since chaga can only grow on birch trees, chaga is especially common in Russia, Siberia and Northeastern Europe. Traditionally, most birch forests have been located in these areas.
Chaga grows up exclusively live birch trees. The birch eventually dies from the chaga.
History of chaga
In Russia, chaga has been used as a medicinal mushroom for centuries.
In the West, interest in chaga only arose in the twentieth century. This is partly due to the Russian writer Aleksander Solzhenitsyn. In 1968 he published the novel Cancer Pavilion. In it he described the use of chaga to fight cancer.
Of course this is a literary work and not a medical examination. However, because Aleksander Solzhenitsyn as a writer was especially popular in the west, his novel ensured that many people outside of Russia learned about chaga for the first time.
Wild harvesting versus cultivation
Until now, no one has been able to grow chaga in large quantities. Since chaga only grows on live birch trees, that's no surprise. However, this does mean that all commercially available chaga is harvested by wild picking.
Fortunately, chaga is common in Russia and Northeastern Europe. Therefore, wild harvesting of chaga has so far not had a major impact on the ecosystems in these areas. However, that could change in the future. Now that people outside of Russia have also discovered the beneficial effects of chaga, the demand is increasing rapidly.
On the other hand, the increased demand also makes it more attractive to find a method to grow chaga commercially. It is not that far yet and until then we have to rely on wild picking.
